November 25 2002 An
Apple a Day
Compelling health benefits recently were highlighted at
a Interpoma 2002 conference. Conference speakers reported a
number of components in apples, most notably fiber and
phytonutrients such as flavonoids, have been found to lower
blood cholesterol and may be associated with a reduced risk of
ischemic heart disease, stroke, prostate cancer, type II
diabetes and asthma. Most striking is preliminary research
indicating diets with the highest intake of apple
phytochemicals were associated with a 40-58% reduction in the
incidence of lung cancer. Recent UC-Davis research found that
two apples a day or 12 oz. of 100% apple juice reduced the
damaging effects of LDL cholestrol. Eating apples may even
assist weight loss and weight maintenence efforts by providing
20 percent of the recommended daily fiber for adults (one
tennis ball-sized apple). www.usapple.org

November 19 2002 DBP Safe as Used in Nail Polish In a
recently released expert analysis commissioned by the American
Beauty Association (ABA), it was confirmed that Dibutyl
Phthalate (DBP) is safe for its current use in nail polish
products. On November 18, 2002 ABA submitted the analysis and
test results to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel
(CIR). DBP is used as a plasticizer in consumer products
ranging from food packaging to toys, raincoats and shower
curtains, as well as cosmetics. In nail polish, it adds
resiliency for a long lasting, glossy finish. The analysis
found that DBP "is not available for subungual (nail)
penetration from nail polish products," and that it "does not
add to the bioburden of overall exposure to phthalate
compounds. 312-944-1262

November 14 2002 California Cosmetics Organic Labeling
Law The
California Cosmetics Organic Labeling Law becomes effective
January 1, 2003 and will affect any cosmetic products claiming
to be organic or using organic ingredients. The law requires
that "cosmetic products sold, labeled or represented as

of a cosmetic or personal care product. http://www.usda.gov/
November 13 2002 November is Alzheimer's Disease Awareness
Month The
deadly brain disease destroys what we consider to be the most
important part of our selves--our mind, memories and
personality. Four million Americans now suffer from
Alzheimer's disease, and if no cure is found by the middle of
the century, that number will skyrocket to 14 million. The
U.S. Congress designated November as National Alzheimer's
Disease Month in order to raise public awareness of the
terrible toll that Alzheimer's takes on individuals and
society. 800-437-2423, http://www.ahaf.org/

November 12 2002 California Cosmetology and Barbering Returns to
"Board" Regulations. On
October 30, 2002, California Governor Gray Davis signed SB
1482 into law. This new law places California's barbering,
cosmetology, electrology, esthetic and manicuring industries
under the regulatory authority of a new nine member "board,"
replacing the current State-governed Bureau of Cosmetology
& Barbering under the Department of Consumer Affairs. As
of January 1, 2003, the new law creates a nine-member board,
comprised of five public (non-industry) members and four
industry professions representatives. Having the five
non-industry board members helps ensure a diverse view on
industry issues and precludes individual agendas from having
undue influence on results. Board member terms of service are
limited to four years and only two consecutive terms.
